The chat will be hosted by Amy Hilton and Hazel Roddam and will be based on this paper: 'Allied health research positions: a qualitative evaluation of their impact'.
The findings in this research highlight the value of allied health profession (AHP) clinical research positions.
They also build on previous evidence to demonstrate the value that AHP research positions may have on our collective research capacity and culture, clinical services, and patient outcomes.
"…research isn't this incredibly difficult thing that only very special people can do. Actually, it's attainable by many and [it was] quite inspiring".
This paper uses interviews with individuals in AHP clinical research positions, their managers, and key stakeholders to explore the impact of these roles. It also describes mechanisms that enable or hinder their impact.
These interviews revealed nine key outcomes of the research positions:
- Clinician skill development: in research skills, and empowerment to up-skill peers
- Increased research activity: increased number of clinicians engaging in research, making the research increasingly clinically meaningful
- Clinical and service changes: changing clinical procedures and service delivery models that improved patient and service outcomes
- Research outputs: increased contribution to journal publications, national and international conference presentations, and grant funding
- Collaborations: assisting clinicians to form networks with stakeholders, including university academics, other research positions and other healthcare organisations
- Culture changes: enhancing the culture of research and evidence-based practice to improve attitudes towards research
- Allied health reputation and profile: raising the profile of the individual and the team as active contributors to research; leadership support was key to this
- Research infrastructure: contributing to the development of advisory committees, and developing departmental performance indicators to monitor research activity
- Development of individuals in research positions: learning about and developing networks with other professionals, and making meaningful changes to patient care
